Learn more about the Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum and the sports history exhibition titled Margaret Island-Sports Island!, which can be visited until September 27.
According to the Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum, you can see two exhibitions at the same time with one ticket. On the one hand, the exhibition presents the rich cultural and sports history of Margaret Island, from the founding of the first sports clubs in the second half of the 19th century, through the gentlemen's sports of the 1920s-1930s, through the mass sports movements of the socialist era to the present day.
"Margitsziget has now become one of the most important venues for domestic competitive and recreational sports, an inalienable part of the capital's identity, and a center of community life. In addition to the sports history layer, the exhibition is also a visual storehouse that provides an insight into the Museum's rich collection and gives visitors a taste of what a museologist's work consists of and what the artefact management entails," they wrote.
About the Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum in a Nutshell
The Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum is Hungary's only national sports museum, and its collection contains more than 12,000 objects and 300,000 photos, documents, films and posters - including Olympic relics, personal belongings of sports legends and memories of outstanding competitions. The announcement reminds us that a significant transformation process began in 2024, during which the Museum completely reconsidered its role, operational structure and appearance with the involvement of external experts.
As a result, the interactive exhibition titled Sport Odyssey on Margaret Island, planned for the 2024 Paris Games, was born, the medium- and long-term institutional strategy of the Sports Museum was completed, and the decision was made that the Museum could move into the Holdudvar building in 2025.
"It is an exciting coincidence that exactly 100 years ago, in May 1926, a sports history exhibition opened at the Hungarian National Museum and that the Margaret Island Silver Ball award, which was won by the FTC in 1909, was also featured in the exhibition at that time. This artifact is also on display in a prominent place in the current exhibition of the Sports Museum, next to the entrance, courtesy of the Fradi Museum until mid-June," the announcement reads.
