As temperatures soar across Europe during the current heatwave, Budapest has unveiled a timely summer attraction: a significantly expanded free beach on the banks of the Danube.
The Duna-fürdő Árasztó-part free beach reopened on July 1 and will remain open until August 31, offering locals and visitors a rare chance to swim in the Danube without leaving the city. What began last year as a small experimental bathing area has now grown into a 100-metre-long riverside beach, making it one of Budapest’s largest free public bathing areas.

Located on the Árasztó-part section of the Danube in Budapest’s 11th district, the beach has been designed to provide a natural swimming experience while maintaining modern comfort and safety standards. Visitors will find a renovated staircase leading to the water, environmentally friendly beach furniture, showers supplied with running water, handwashing facilities and free drinking water. The area is also fully accessible, allowing easy access for wheelchair users and families with strollers.
Safety has been a major focus of the project. Following dredging works, the bathing area has a maximum water depth of 1.2 metres, and professional lifeguards are on duty throughout opening hours. Water quality is monitored regularly with laboratory testing conducted twice a week during the season.
The beach is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between July 1 and August 31. Operations may be affected by Danube water levels and weather conditions, but under normal circumstances visitors can enjoy a safe and refreshing swim in one of Europe’s great rivers right in the heart of the Hungarian capital.
