Travelling to Budapest with your dog is a wonderful idea. The Hungarian capital is getting more and more pet-friendly, with plenty of welcoming accommodations, dog-friendly cafés and pubs, and beautiful green spaces where you and your furry friend can enjoy the city together. To make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are a few useful things worth knowing before you arrive.
Booking a Pet-Friendly Accommodation
The good news is that Budapest offers a wide range of pet-friendly hotels and apartments. However, it is always worth double-checking the details before finalising your booking.
Make sure the accommodation explicitly accepts dogs, and take a look at any additional pet fees. It is also a good idea to check whether there are size restrictions or other house rules, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
Getting Around Budapest with a Dog
Budapest has an excellent public transport system, and dogs are welcome on most services. Small dogs may travel free of charge if they are transported in a closed carrier or bag. Larger dogs can also use public transport, provided they are kept on a leash and wear a muzzle. In this case, a separate ticket is usually required, although if you have a monthly travel pass, you may take one dog with you without purchasing an additional ticket.
Police dogs, therapy dogs and assistance dogs are exempt from these rules.
One important thing to remember: dogs are not allowed to sit on the seats. They should remain on the floor next to you, unless they are small enough to stay comfortably in your lap inside their carrier.

Exploring the City on Foot
One of the best ways to discover Budapest is simply by walking around, and your dog can happily join the adventure. Officially, dogs must remain on a leash except in designated off-leash areas, and owners are required to clean up after their pets. Failing to do so may result in a fine.
The good news is that many cafés, ruin bars and even some shopping centres welcome dogs. Since policies vary, it is worth checking in advance on the venue’s website or asking staff when you arrive.
The Best Outdoor Spots for Dogs
Budapest has several fantastic parks where dogs are welcome. The City Park (Városliget), Margaret Island and Hajógyári-sziget are all excellent choices for long walks and outdoor fun.
Many parks also feature fenced dog runs, and the City Park is home to a particularly impressive dog adventure park near Pántlika Bisztró, complete with agility equipment, water facilities and plenty of space to play.
Nature Walks Beyond the City Centre
If you are in the mood for a longer walk or hike, head to Római-part, Normafa, Hármashatárhegy or Naplás-tó. These scenic areas are perfect for spending quality time outdoors. In summer, you can find some refreshment at the so-called dog beaches, where people and dogs can cool themselves in the water of a lake or the Danube.
