Spotted in Budapest: Arnold Schwarzenegger Plays Chess with Judit Polgár

2026.07.06

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Budapest stay continues with a meeting that brought together two legends: Hollywood's Terminator and Hungarian chess icon Judit Polgár.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's extended stay in Budapest continues to delight locals and visitors alike, with the Hollywood legend appearing in unexpected places across the capital. From cycling through the city streets to attending private events and film shoots, the former California governor has become one of Budapest's most recognizable temporary residents in recent weeks.

His latest Budapest encounter brought together two world-famous figures from very different fields. Schwarzenegger recently met Hungarian chess grandmaster Judit Polgár, who later shared her excitement about the experience on her social media.

"WHAT A DAY!" Polgár wrote, describing her joy at meeting "the one and only Terminator." According to the chess legend, Schwarzenegger's passion for chess impressed her just as much as his cheerful, charismatic, and friendly personality. She showed him several of her favorite chess compositions, which he reportedly loved. Polgár also revealed that Schwarzenegger plays chess regularly to keep his mind sharp. She signed off her post with a fitting farewell: "Hasta la vista, viszlát, Arnold!"

For international visitors unfamiliar with her achievements, Judit Polgár is one of Hungary's most celebrated sporting figures and is widely considered the strongest female chess player in history. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she chose to compete primarily in open tournaments against the world's best players regardless of gender. During her career, she defeated numerous world champions and reached the top ten of the world rankings, earning a place among the greatest chess players of her era.

For tourists visiting Budapest this summer, the encounter is another reminder that Schwarzenegger is currently working in the city and can occasionally be spotted in surprisingly ordinary settings. Over the past few weeks, residents and visitors have reported seeing him cycling around Budapest, training at local gyms, and attending events while filming a new movie in Hungary.
