Running every day at 11:00 a.m., this free English language walking tour takes visitors through the heart of Pest, combining history, architecture, riverside views and local stories in just two hours.
A daily walking tour through downtown Budapest offers visitors an accessible introduction to some of the Hungarian capital’s most famous landmarks, from St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Chain Bridge to the Parliament Building and the Danube riverfront.
Operated by Luna Walking Tours, the two-hour English-language tour starts every day at 11:00 a.m. and follows a route through the heart of Pest, combining history, architecture, local culture and panoramic views. Participants meet behind St. Stephen’s Basilica at the corner of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Szent István Square, where guides carrying purple umbrellas welcome guests before departure.
The walk begins with an introduction to St. Stephen’s Basilica, one of Budapest’s most important religious landmarks. Although the tour does not enter the church, visitors learn about its construction, the history of Hungary’s first king, St. Stephen, and some of the stories connected to the building.
From there, the route continues through downtown Budapest, passing Elisabeth Square, the Budapest Eye, Vörösmarty Square, Fashion Street and the historic Gerbeaud Café. Along the way, guides share stories about the city’s development, notable figures and everyday life in the Hungarian capital.
One of the highlights is the walk to the Danube riverbank, where participants enjoy views of the Buda Hills, Buda Castle Hill and Gellért Hill. The tour then crosses one of Budapest’s most recognizable landmarks, the Chain Bridge, before stopping near the Gresham Palace, today home to the Four Seasons Hotel.
The itinerary also includes the Shoes on the Danube Memorial, one of the city’s most moving historical sites. The memorial commemorates victims killed on the riverbank during the Second World War and provides an opportunity to reflect on a significant chapter of Hungarian history.
The tour concludes at Kossuth Lajos Square in front of the Hungarian Parliament Building. Guides explain the history of the Gothic Revival landmark, its construction and its role in Hungary’s political life. The building remains one of Budapest’s most photographed attractions and one of the largest parliamentary buildings in Europe.
Additional stops and sights featured during the walk include the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Little Princess statue, Andrássy Avenue, Váci Street, Margaret (Margit) Bridge panoramas and several historic cafés.
The tour operates on a free-tour model, meaning visitors can decide at the end how much they wish to contribute based on their experience.
