Join music fans again at one of Europe's defining world music showcase festivals in April: Budapest Ritmo is just around the corner.
From Cuba to South Korea, Budapest Ritmo, which is being held for the eleventh time, will feature a number of special performers. The world music festival awaits the audience and professional participants from April 9 to 11 as part of the Bartók Spring International Art Weeks.
The festival will take place in a new, more compact format this year: both the concerts and the conference programs will take place in the House of Music Hungary - the organizers announced to MTI.
As they wrote, the concert hall with special acoustic features, the Sound Dome, which is unique in Europe, and the high-tech sound system will all serve the diverse musical world of the boutique festival in the House of Music Hungary.
Budapest Ritmo awaits with a free opening day and exciting musical experiences
Budapest Ritmo will kick off with a free opening day on Thursday, April 9th, with three young emerging bands making their debuts in front of invited international experts and the audience as part of the showcase program, which this year once again showcases the fresh talents of world music, the meeting of musical roots and contemporary influences.
The following day, on Friday, April 10th, the Serbian band Naked will perform, bringing Balkan and Roma musical traditions closer together with Kossuth and Womex Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mónika Lakatos' new formation, FolkTrio, followed by a concert by one of the most exciting Hungarian bands of recent years, the young Hakumba.
The international performers will be led by the Parisian Ko Shin Moon, whose music uses traditional Mediterranean instruments and analog synthesizers to create a unique psychedelic sound.
On the closing day of Saturday, April 11, performers from three continents will arrive to present their multi-layered soundscapes. The evening will begin with the Slovenian Bakalina Velika, who sensitively reimagines Balkan motifs, followed by Dal:um, who translates the clean beauty of South Korean folk into a minimalist, experimental language.
The highlight of the day will be Grupo Compay Segundo from Cuba: the formation that keeps the legacy of the legendary composer and musician alive will evoke the pulsating, timeless atmosphere of Havana nights. The evenings will close with a DJ program.
An important element of the festival is the two-day professional conference, which examines current issues of world music and related scenes with the participation of international and domestic experts. This year, the program places special emphasis on the situation, opportunities and international connections of the Hungarian music industry, creating space for dialogue, knowledge sharing and new collaborations - they announced.
